GOHBA 2007 Award - Renovations / Additions $225,000.00-$300,000.00

Our clients desired a sleek, contemporary, clean lined addition to their home that would leave a lasting impression. The design needed to be unconventional yet functional. This was to be an addition as well as an exterior facelift.
The goals were to create a 2 storey addition, bringing some of the main living areas into the upper portion of the home and out of the dark basement, while breaking down the barriers between the inside and outside.reno_7
The ground floor addition includes a mudroom, family room/entertainment area, a built-in eating area adjacent to the existing kitchen and an outdoor, screened in eating area. The garage now connects to the main house in order to eliminate the need to go outside to access the garage. The second storey includes an office with large windows, a laundry room and a beautiful transition corridor from the existing home to the new addition, complete with skylights, cathedral ceilings, a glass floor and a self supported concrete shelf for display.
One of the biggest exterior impacts is created by the use of steel panels and large black aluminum clad custom windows. These are not only a main component of the architecture, but tie all the elements of the design together: the glass exterior railings, cedar outdoor eating area, the stucco/siding combination, trellis etc. On the second floor a concrete shelf dissects an expansive window that looks out over the deck. The steel cladding anchors a cantilevered second floor corner – drawing the eye in to these details.
Inside, the impact of the rich, dark stained millwork is balanced by the ample light provided by large windows. The large windows further connect outside environment and inside of the home. A glass floor centered over the walkway in the dining space links the living space below with the work area above, and is mirrored by a skylight above. An exterior dining space further pushes the barriers of conventional space planning.

All in all, the sum of the parts creates a whole.  The design truly illustrates this concept.
