reno_project1Our clients - a very busy family of five needed more space to cook, live and entertain.  Our firm was brought in to discuss ways of enlarging the kitchen in order to make it much more functional.  The original layout was very closed and we wanted to open it up in order to make it more family friendly.

It was becoming apparent that an addition was in order if we were going to meet this large family’s needs.

Our solution – a two storey addition on the back of the home with lots of fenestration on both levels to take advantage of the large backyard views.  In order to keep costs in check, we designed a simple face lift on the front of the home in order to give the home more curb appeal and a much nicer entry.  We combined the existing kitchen and dining area to create a large open concept kitchen and re-located the dining room into the brightest room in the house - the addition.   A space designed with entertaining and large gatherings in mind.

The dining room is the room with a view! Flanked on all sides with windows and anchored by a stunning, central fireplace wall, with window seats on either side.  A great place to curl up and read a book or simply hang out while someone cooks in the kitchen.  The custom made table and benches are magnificently unique in design.  The table top is made from 5 walnut slabs joined and stitched together with patina-ed steel crosses. The bases are made out of 3” cold rolled steel.  The benches also made of thick walnut slabs, waterfall’s down one end and supported at the other end with an inlaid 3” cold rolled steel square leg. A detail that is the centre of conversation at many of the parties.

The kitchen, transitional in design is in keeping with the original architecture of the home and boasts white lacquered cabinets to the ceiling and honed antique brown granite counters with an eating area for 3 and a fully functioning desk that can be hidden away with pocket doors.  A full depth fridge was wrapped in tall cabinetry leading and transitioning into a large mudroom, where each family member has their own ‘locker’.

The 2nd floor addition houses our clients home office.  A beautiful  room to work or sit and contemplate …   perhaps sit on the 2nd floor deck and share a morning coffee with a view. Costs were kept in check by focusing only on what was necessary to make the space function better for our clients.  A perfect example of where form and function come together to create a whole new space.
